Developing a winning organization with good employees doesn鈥檛 happen by chance.

The most successful businesses are those that plot, analyze, and put into action a plan that develops the best team possible.

Talent isn鈥檛 everything, although it鈥檚 many times the easiest point to spot in a person.

Attitude is just as important as talent

When hiring the right people, the most important ingredient is the person himself and his innate talents.

Yet, at the same time, an ingredient that must not be overlooked is attitude. It鈥檚 important to hire people who have talent and the right attitude.

Do you take the time to seek out the best people for the positions you have available? Or, do you 鈥減anic hire鈥 the first person who comes along because you feel your back is against the wall?

As a result, too often we end up with people who will never measure up to our standards 鈥 no matter how much we train them or encourage them to make an attitude adjustment.

It鈥檚 not because they鈥檙e bad people. They鈥檙e just the wrong people.

Take a firm approach to training

Firm, not tough. You can demoralize a person if you鈥檙e too tough.

You know that the bad things that happen in a training program seem to have a way of sticking around a lot more than the good things.

Never take the 鈥渢ry鈥 out of a person. If you do, you鈥檙e in trouble because it will be next to impossible to get it back.

How often do we become impatient with new employees because they have trouble learning in two months what took us 20 years to learn through experience?

Do we dedicate the time that鈥檚 really needed to training new people, or just the time we have available?

Since bad things hang on a lot longer than good things, we need to be doubly cautious about making negative statements or expressing frustration during training.

Too much negative reinforcement has a way of taking the 鈥渢ry鈥 out of even the most talented people.

Maintain discipline throughout the organization

The discipline your employees develop outside your organization and the discipline they develop in their lives will carry over into the discipline you need from them in working with customers and co-workers.

Your service vehicles should be spotless inside and out, not because they will operate more efficiently if they鈥檙e absolutely spotless, but because that discipline will carry over to what does make a difference.

And, you never know when a customer will want to take a peak inside.

This is why it鈥檚 important that everyone in your organization reports to work looking like the professionals they are.

You never know if the person passing by is a potential customer who will base her initial purchasing decision on the way your crew looks on the job.

Leave an outstanding legacy

If you were asked what accomplishments you鈥檙e proudest of in your career, would you be able to list among them your reputation for turning out superior service people?

Will you leave a legacy for producing superstars?

It doesn鈥檛 seem to matter whether you鈥檙e cleaning carpet, restoring catastrophes, or maintaining buildings 鈥 at the end of the day, it always comes down to the people.
