Johnson says his hospital uses a quaternary disinfectant specified for hospital use on its soft surfaces. The chemical disinfects and deodorizes at the same time, and Johnson says it鈥檚 鈥渟afe to use on all patient contact surfaces.鈥� 鈥淎ny time you use a bleach product, it will do some damage to soft surfaces,鈥� he says. With cleaners and disinfectants designed for soft surfaces, as long as the surface isn鈥檛 riddled with holes and other imperfections, such products will clean and disinfect without damaging the surface. The savvy cleaning operation should do its homework before using chemicals on any surface. Both Slaminski and Johnson say it鈥檚 important to know what the soft surface is made of, then work with a distributor to spec chemicals that are safe to use. 鈥淵ou want to be sure whether it鈥檚 the bed or the mattress or a keyboard cover that you鈥檙e reading the manufacturer鈥檚 specs and using the products recommended for that surface,鈥� says Johnson. 鈥淭hat way you鈥檒l get longevity in the product and won鈥檛 void the warranty.鈥� Johnson also relies heavily on experts within the hospital鈥檚 infection control department. 鈥淲e meet with them regularly and call them any time guidance is needed with a specific product,鈥� he says. The cleaning chemical鈥檚 manufacturer can also be a good resource, says Hicks. 鈥淵ou need to show the manufacturer of these products what you鈥檙e using to disinfect, and then ask them, 鈥楧o you approve the use of this disinfectant on your product?鈥� If they refuse to do that, then I would look for a different product.鈥� - See more at:
